Who or what is Gothic Sugar?
Gothic Sugar is both an alias for me online and a term to describe my art. It's something of a Morbid Fantasy. My art ranges from sweet to "disturbing" and anything in between as I explore various aspects of society in my paintings. War (Revolution), politics (The Bush Boys in Outerspace), feminism (Am I the Right Kind Now?) and the questioning of one's own beliefs (Feed It). My subjects are predominantly female. And within these paintings and drawings, they are depicted in refined clothing resembling the lolita fashion which serves two purposes. It's feminine while being feminist (or rather neofeminist) as it is a rejection of the standard that has been assigned to women while recreating fashion and borrowing ideals from an aspect of a more oppressive period in time. It's ironic, but it works.
Who is Alicia?
Alicia is a self taught artist, a student, and a reader. I go to school and am an English Major. I've always drawn, painted when I could afford to, and took maybe four art classes in my life. All at the college level which basically means sit in a room and draw then have someone tell you what you're doing right. Hmmm... I've been lucky enough to have nice teachers, but they all tell me the same thing. You can't "teach" art, but you can learn techniques. Anyways, I guess my point is that like many other artists out there, I'm self taught. And like many others, I want to make a living as an artist. Right now I'm slugging it out as an English Major and am staring down the barrel of grad school and a "stable" career. Most likely teaching or writing if it pans out. I would much rather make a living as a full time artist.
